Finding a lump or change to your breast tissue can be alarming. Women are told how important it is to check their breasts, so when you do find a lump, it is understandable it is a worry. Most of the time, a breast lump is not breast cancer and simply a benign condition. However, there is a risk of cancer so it is vital you get further checks.
Some lumps go away on their own. In younger women, lumps can be related to menstrual periods and disappear by the end of the cycle. Any breast lump in the breast or under the arm must be looked into further. You should consider visiting your GP or arranging an appointment for a specialist breast cancer clinic.
Identifying Breast Lumps
You are not a doctor and so trying to diagnose your own breast abnormalities simply isn’t possible. Some women have more lumps and bumps in their breasts than others so it is important to get to know your own body so you notice any changes.
Lumps that feel harder, sore or different from the other tissue or that feel like a change must be investigated further. There are often benign reasons for this, such as a cyst, but proper investigation is essential.
One-Stop Breast Clinics
Do not ignore any worries about your breast tissue. If you do not want to visit your GP or want answers urgently, you can visit a One-Stop Breast Clinic. Mr Chong runs regular One-Stop Clinics and it is an opportunity to undergo a triple assessment for breast abnormalities. In most cases, Mr Chong will give you a diagnosis by the end of the clinic consultation.
Patients may require mammograms, breast ultrasounds and biopsies and in some instances you may need to wait for the result of the biopsy. This usually takes less than a week. If there is evidence of cancer, the team act quickly to arrange any surgical solutions and will ensure any referrals to oncology and other specialists are quickly in place too.
