Mr Kelvin Chong describes himself as one of a “new generation of breast surgeons who are trained in oncoplastic breast surgery”. He is an experienced breast cancer consultant working in London. He is able to support patients throughout their journey from diagnosis to remission. Furthermore, he works to ensure every possible avenue is explored to minimise the impact of breast cancer and the adverse effects of breast cancer treatments.
There are thousands of breast cancer diagnoses every year in the UK. However, survival rates are much higher than other forms. In fact, figures from Cancer Research UK show a 76% survival rate (for ten years or more).
Understanding Breast Cancer
Breast cancer is a malignant tumour that grows into the surrounding tissue of the milk ducts. If not treated, it may spread to other areas of the body. There are some key risk factors for breast cancer. They include: early menstruation, being female, taking HRT, smoking and genetic history. These are just some of the factors. However, some patients develop the disease regardless. It is important to check breast tissue for abnormalities regularly. If you have concerns about a breast abnormality, visiting an experienced breast cancer consultant is an effective way of getting rapid results.
Rapid One-Stop Clinics
Mr Kelvin Chong runs regular One-Stop Clinics for patients experiencing breast symptoms. During your clinic appointment, you will undergo a range of assessments. The assessments will include a clinical exam, mammogram and breast ultrasound. Sometimes Mr Chong will take biopsy samples for further analysis. In most cases, Mr Chong can often provide a diagnosis by the end of the consultation and arrange future appointments, surgeries, and treatments.
Oncoplastic Breast Surgery
Mr Chong practices oncoplastic breast surgery. This field of oncological surgery looks to rebuild and reconstruct the breast whilst also removing any cancerous tumours. The aim is to keep scarring to a minimum and maximise the remaining breast tissue to ensure the physical impact of the lumpectomy is not too severe. Oncoplastic procedures can include reconstruction using implants and other treatments such as breast reduction to minimise any unevenness between the breasts and fat grafting (lipomodelling) to help ensure the lumpectomy is not too noticeable.
Mr Chong’s experienced multidisciplinary team supports patients through their recovery and further treatment. This team also includes special breast cancer nurses. All patients benefit from a comprehensive care package to suit their individual needs.
